While McLaren seems to be the team to beat at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix this weekend, the enhanced performance of Ferrari has caught the attention of its competitors. With a notable upgrade to its floor before the Austrian Grand Prix, Ferrari has shown improvements that pleased drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Leclerc managed to split the McLarens in qualifying last weekend and finished third, while Hamilton enjoyed his best qualifying since joining the team, starting and finishing fourth. Ferrari’s impressive pace continued in Friday practice, with Hamilton topping FP1 and finishing third in FP2, while Leclerc followed closely in second behind Lando Norris’ McLaren. The unexpected turnaround by Ferrari has left many surprised, with Red Bull and Max Verstappen now viewing Hamilton and Leclerc as the main threats to McLaren’s dominance on the track. Despite McLaren’s confidence in holding off Ferrari, the positive performance gains from the Italian team could pose challenges for other contenders like Mercedes, with George Russell competing for the ‘best of the rest’ spot. Russell acknowledged Ferrari’s recent strong showings, attributing part of it to the summer heat affecting car performance, while expressing enjoyment for the Silverstone atmosphere and hoping for improvement in the coming days.
